"Not all those who wander are lost"
I'm going to start off with one of my favorite quotes. (mainly because I can't off the top of my head remember something that someone around me said recently... I'm going to have to start writing it down) Anyway one of my all time FAVORITE quotes is from a poem, "All that is Gold does not Glitter" that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings.
Now full disclaimer I've never actually read The Lord of the Rings series or any books that have to do with the series. But I came upon this quote one day, I don't remember exactly where it was (probably twitter or something of the sort) and it really grabbed my attention. It really connected with me because after high school I plan on going off somewhere beside here to college, and then after that traveling the world, going wherever I want. Basically just wondering the world with no set destination. Normally when I tell people of my hope to do this they tell me it's not smart, or that I should have a set plan for what I'm doing. But I know exactly what I'm doing, I know what I want to do and just because I'm traveling around doesn't mean I'm lost. This quote can have many different interpretations, and people can have many different take a ways from it. This quote does not have to just be interpreted such a literal sense as my interpretation was. I could never even think of all the infinite possibilities of what this quote could mean to any single person who reads it.
Then, I am also taking this quote out of context from the rest of the poem. When put into context it opens the door to so many more interpretations. I'll share the link to the full poem below. But I just want you to think of what this quote means to you, how does it impact you?

I love the idea of wandering the world with no destination. It is scary to think that we have to be grown ups and make real decisions after this year. I do not know what or where I want to be I think it cool the way you look at it.
ReplyDeleteIt is scary. I mean how can anyone expect us to know what we want to do the REST OF OR LIFE when we're barley 18 years old?
DeleteI have, ever since i was little, wanted to travel after highschool. its been my dream. I also really like that quote, its inspiring. When people ask me what i want to do it makes me think of this quote : the poets, by which i mean all artists, are finally the only people who know the truth about us. soldiers dont. statesmen dont. priests dont. union leaders dont. only the poets
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. No one else understand us, not really.
DeleteI clicked the link, and although it is completely referencing Lord of the Rings, which I have also never seen, what you can take from it is is honest. I understand what you were saying about people assuming you´re not smart for wanting to travel, people tell me the same thing when I tell them all my dreams and aspirations.
ReplyDeleteFollow your dreams no matter what people tell you. Even if you fail there's always gunna be another option to go to, but if you never try you'll never know!!!
